Zune HD – Where are the Apps?

Posted by Ken on Nov 4, 2009 in Gadgets, Microsoft

I picked up a Zune HD a couple of weeks ago.  It’s a very nice device, on par with my daughters iPod Touch.  The screen is a little smaller than the iPod, but much crisper.

The Zune software isn’t bad, but it’s not iTunes slick either.  It does what it’s supposed to and I like how it manages podcasts.  I also like how I can sync over wifi to my library.

One of the things that seems to be missing is apps.  There are a few, like weather and a few games, but nothing more than a handful are available.  On the plus side, they are free.  There is an advertisement that shows when you launch some of the apps, but that doesn’t really bother me.  I can put up with that for free.  I just hope that Microsoft has plans to release more or open up development so that more become available.

Overall, I’m very pleased with it.  It works well with only a few things that need attention.

This via ShieldsGroup.

On Sunday events will transpire.
Big Ben, with his team will conspire.
When it’s over you bet
That the ole’ guy named Brett
Will beg for a chance to retire.

Go Steelers!

Where You Been Homeboy?

Posted by Ken on Oct 18, 2009 in Family

It’s been some time since I made a post!  Why is that?  Well, let me tell you why!

Due to the poor economy, the company I work for decided to close our Pennsylvania plant.  I was given the opportunity to move to one of our other plants in Fargo, ND.  After much thought and prayer, we decided it was the best thing for our family and made the move.  We have been in Fargo about three weeks now, and so far we are really enjoying it.

If you wold have asked me what’s in Fargo a month ago I would have thought… nothing?  And boy would have I been wrong.  This area is very large and is continuing to grow, unlike the area we left.

So that’s what I’ve been up to!  When things settle down a bit more I will post some pictures of the area and our new house!

Map a Network Drive to Your Online SkyDrive, Amazon S3 or Google Apps

Posted by Ken on Aug 30, 2009 in Cloud Storage, Networking, Software, Tips

I found this via ZDNet.  It was posted by Zack Whittake.

I’ve been wanting to be able to do this for a long time now!  Wanted to share in case there are others like me who want this functionality.

1. Download Gladinet Cloud Desktop. It’s free and only around 12MB so it should download fairly quickly.
2.
Start the installation process and go through as you normally would.
3.
During the installation process, ensure these two boxes are ticked.

4. Launch the Gladinet Cloud Desktop application at the end of the installation screen by hitting Close.
5. During the setup, make sure you only use the free starter edition. This is all you will need.

6. Select a drive letter which you want to use as your network SkyDrive. I normally choose Z: as my primary network drive letter.

7. Pick a space on your local hard drive where you can use as an offline cache. Make sure that drive is in your own user profile area (if you have multiple users on one machine) and that the drive you select also has at least 25GB free.

8. If you wish to encrypt your local cache, then select the tick box as so and enter in a password. Hit Next.
9. Ensure that automatic updates are checked, then hit Finish. A status icon will appear in the notification area.

10. A new dialog box will appear. Select the tick box at the bottom making sure the screen doesn’t show next time, then hit “Mount Disk Storage or Web Storage as Virtual Directory”.
11. Select “Windows Live SkyDrive” or the storage provider of your choice, and name it.

12. On the next screen, follow the instructions on screen and enter in your service username/email and password.
13. Hit “Yes” to any prompts, such as those to accept the end-user licence agreement.

And there you have it. You can still only upload files smaller than 50MB, but if you want to carry out a full system backup and place it on the web, this can still be done. Backup the hard drive and convert (if it isn’t done automatically) to an ISO. Use this ISO in WinRAR or a file splitting utility, and create the portions smaller than 50MB in size. Upload away, and your hard drive is backed up securely and safely online.

Dell to Discontinue It's 12" Mini Netbook

Posted by Ken on Aug 9, 2009 in Gadgets, Netbooks

According to reports – Dell is discontinuing it’s 12″ netbook line.  I have read different reason for this move, but the one I think is the true reason is Intel and Dell itself.  According to this post at TechCrunch, Intel isn’t fond of 12″ netbooks.  Apparently the Atom isn’t the cash cow that say, a dual core is.  And for the other reason – Dell itself.   Who would buy a more expensive 14″ laptop when the 12″ Mini works just fine?Dell Mini

It’s sad really.  I was thinking of getting a Dell Mini 12.  I have both the 8.9″ and 10″ flavors, and I think the 12″ would be the sweet spot.  But it seems that I’m clueless, because the powers that be call 10″ the sweet spot.  So the long and short of it is this, if you intended on picking up a Dell Mini 12 you better hurry.  They are still available in the Dell outlet (when I checked today).

Edit:  Here is another link on this story.  This is from CNET who pretty much back up my guess.  A few things that I really don’t understand though are 1) It takes no more horsepower to make a 12″ netbook display a picture than it does a 10″.  A little more battery yes, horsepower no.  2) Why on earth would you ship a netbook with Vista?  That’s just asking for a heap of problems.

Discuss this at the forums!

City of Champions Wallpaper

Posted by Ken on Jul 28, 2009 in Penquins, Pittsburgh, Steelers, Wallpaper

It’s only 1024 X 768, but if you’re a fan of the “Steel City” it’ll do.  I don’t take credit for it, in fact it was sent to me via email, so I don’t know who the original artist is.  There are some parts that aren’t great, but it’ll do!  But in the end, isn’t Pittsburgh a beautiful city?

Acer Aspire One Wireless Problems

Posted by Ken on Jul 23, 2009 in Gadgets, Modding, Netbooks, Networking

This is a pretty well know issue with the Acer Aspire One.  I don’t know why Acer hasn’t done something to address this issue.  The only thing that I have found that seems to work is replacing the wireless card in the computer.  My wife was the main user of the One so I didn’t show the enthusiasm that I would have if it would have been mine :) .  But I did get around to replacing the card today, and that should take care of this once and for all.

For those who have this issue, which seems to include – the adapter disappearing from the device manager, not being able to connect, not seeing any available wireless connections, or very slow internet speeds – if you have found a fix without having to replace the card please post it here!

The card that I used came from a Dell laptop and the model is Dell Wireless 1395 Adapter.  I have read posts of others using an Intel solution.  Please note that a regular, full sized wireless card will not work in the One,  it’s a smaller card.  That figures since I had about 10 regular sized cards!

I took the opportunity to take some pictures when I had it opened up again.  I hope they help!

This is a shot with the keyboard removed – That is the Dell wireless card getting ready for its new home!

This is both wireless cards.  The old card is removed at the top.  You can also see how I have installed the hard drive.
